Hill "Signature" guitars are custom-made using the most up-to-date designs, methods and materials to produce the highest quality sound, playability and beauty. The current "Signature" Model features a "double top" (pioneered originally by Dammann, Wagner, and others) composed of a Nomex core (an ultra light cell structure), "sandwiched" between two very thin layers of spruce (on the outside) and cedar (on the inside). This makes for an extremely light and efficient soundboard, but is domed in such a way as to maximizes stiffness at the same time - very important for both the sound quality and structural stability. Outwardly it seems just like a normal spruce soundboard. This technique is borrowed from ultra light aviation technology. It is braced using a lightweight system of lattices for a durable but flexible system. Other features include dual soundports, raised fingerboard, truss rod for easily adjusting the neck and 20th fret for players requiring a high C natural.
This particular model is Kenny's newest version of the Signature which he calls the "SIgnature Legacy" which has some very interesting additional features - namely the addition of an enhanced Ergonomics design and the True Temperament fretting system. The Ergonomic design includes a body shape that is somewhat tapered from treble to bass side (so it settles against the body comfortably) with arm rest and back relief. The armrest is wider than you often see. It does more than just relieve the pressure on the forearm, it changes the posture of the right arm, bringing the shoulder back making it more comfortable, natural and less stressed. The relief on the back makes it more gentle at that leaning pressure point. The True Temperament fret system compensates every note on the fingerboard, taking into account that the six strings each have different tensions and densities, and in fact the stretching behavior of an individual string is different along the length of the fingerboard. The goal is not to create some kind of different scale or mode, but rather to be more accurate in the equally-tempered scale the guitar is designed for. It is not hard to play on, in fact most players adjust instantly. This system was originally developed by Anders Thidel in Sweden, and Kenny Hill has been the primary maker in the classical guitar realm to have adopted this system. This instrument truly delivers all that Kenny can do with his decades of experience not just as a luthier but also as a player.
